The Wa Methodist School for the blind, one of the only two schools for visually impaired people in the country has been without a substantive headmaster for close to two years now.
The school, which was established in 1958 and has produced a number of intellectuals with varying degrees from craft instructors, teachers, administrators, Phd holders in international law as well as the first blind minister of state is now facing serious academic challenges including the lack of a headmaster.
The school has limited accommodation for both students and staff with serious water problems, thereby putting the lives of the over 210 students and 35 teachers currently in the school at risk in the event of an outbreak of an epidemic.
The students queue in turns to use the only toilet facility.
These, plus bad road network, inadequate teaching and learning materials are putting the future of the students on the balance as effective teaching and learning can no longer take place at the school.
Speaking to Citi News at the launch of the school’s Old Students Association, some of the students complained that life in the school has become unbearable due to the numerous challenges currently facing the school.
President of the Old Students Association, Christopher Tuu, was worried that the school has not received the needed attention by both past and present governments. ”this school has been neglected by successive governments and we think that the Methodist church should have seen this as a challenge, and ensured the school does not go without a head”
He appealed to government to urgently appoint a headmaster for the school. He said “the absence a headmaster is causing administrative problems in the school and we can’t all sit and watch helplessly for it to collapse.”
In February last year, the Ghana Education Service appointed Madam Ayishatu Jinsung to head head the school but the Methodist Education Unit resisted her appointment , saying she was a non Methodist.
The Chaplain of the school, Rev. Ebenizer Ashon Afful assured that the school will get a headmaster when schools resume in September.
