The Lands Commission says it is worried by the increase in illegal mining operations in Wa in the Upper West Regional capital.
The Commission says the activities of the “galamsey” miners are destroying the vegetation in the region.
A Deputy Divisional Head of Survey and Mapping at the Lands Commission, Sali Ishmeal, speaking to Citi News, admitted that the situation is worrying.
“It is horrible, they just keep scattering the whole place looking for what, I don’t know.”
“Usually its for gold, but we know there’s diamond and other things as well,” he added.
Mr. Ishmael revealed that “over 20 communities had been affected by” the illegal mining activities in Wa.
Illegal mining has been a major problem for the government in recent times all over the country, including in the Northern Regions where a few people had lost their lives in mining accidents.
