Some political parties in Ghana have condemned the Tuesday’s clashes at the headquarters of the New Patriotic Party on Tuesday, describing it as disgraceful.
Angry machete-wielding youth stormed a press conference being addressed by the Chairman, Paul Afoko and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong at the party’s headquarters.
The youth were unhappy with the decisions taken by the General Secretary, including asking the acting deputy communications, Perry Okudzeto, to proceed on leave.
The party’s presidential candidate and for the 2012 general elections and one of the leading contenders for the 2016 elections Nana Akufo Addo, criticized Tuesday’s violence, cautioning that such actions could “compromise (NPP’s) chances for success in 2016.”
The General Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Kofi Asamoah Siaw, called on the other contenders for the NPP’s presidential candidacy, especially the main ones, to publicly condemn the incident.
“It was disgraceful and shameful. What I would expect is a total condemnation from the leadership of the NPP and the people leading the imaginary factions within the NPP so that it doesn’t become the norm and a way out when these disputes have to be addressed,” he added.
The General Secretary of The people’s National Convention, Bernard Mornah, described the incident as “criminal and unfortunate,” adding that it compromised the country’s democratic credentials and must be condemned.
Meanwhile the General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ivor Greenstreen critisised the behaviour of the youth, calling it “uruly and disgraceful.”
“It should be condemned by myself and everyone else, he said.
“I hope it is not repeated and the whole issue is resolved in an amicable and sensible way.”
