New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates have begun voting across the ten regions of the country to prune the number of aspirants seeking to lead the party in the 2016 presidential elections from seven to five.
Citi News’s Sammy Wiafe who is at the party’s headquarters reported that 25 people have voted but voting stalled for about 20 minutes due to a disagreement over eligibilty of one of the voters.
According to Sammy Wiafe, an agent of Addai Nimoh, one of the presidential aspirants delayed the process over a voter whose transfer of vote letter had not being signed by the General Secretary.
Reports indicate that the 2012 presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo and a few other national leaders of the party have already voted.
It is however unclear whether former President John Kufour will be voting today.
Sammy Wiafe said sources at the headquarters say he may not vote.
Fred Djabanor who was at Osu Salem, one of the voting centres in Accra said “here at the centres, we are expected to have 67 voting even though we have 75 on the register.”
“Elections have started and about six or seven people are voting and election is currently ongoing. I can see Prof. Michael Ocquaye, Chairman of the constitutional and legal committee of the NPP and some MPs here waiting to cast their votes,” he added.
From the Ashanti Region, Hawa Iddrisu reported that the voting was yet to begin but party officials were preparing to start.
“Security is very tight here, I see lots of policemen here and I am also told by the regional Police PRO that they also have some men in mufti, to make sure that they beef up security here.”
“I must say delegates have started arriving, I was told some who are coming from Kumasi came last night and some are also on their way here,” she added.
From the Northern region, Karim Naagtogmah reported that the EC is well prepared for today’s super delegates conference.
He said about 70 delegates are expected from 31 constituencies in the region.
“Security arrangements are quite appreciable here so all is set for today’s super delegates’ congress so far as the Northern region is concerned,” he added.
