The organisers of the annual Golden Icons Academy Awards (GIAMA) has released the list of the nominees for this year’s awards. The third in the series, this year’s GIAMA ceremony will be held in Houston, Texas on October 25.
Since its maiden edition in 2012, GIAMA has recognised excellence in the African film industry by honouring the achievement of actors and actresses, writers, directors, producers, technicians, among others.
Even though Ghana didn’t earn many nominations on the slot, Juliet Ibrahim was nominated in the Best Producer category for her movie, Number One Fan.
The films and actors nominated will be competing in 24 categories, including Best Motion Picture, Best Actor/ Actress, Most Promising, Best Original Screenplay, Best Indigenous Film and Best Supporting Actress.
The others are Best Film Director, Best Original Screen Play, Best Short Film, Best Edited Film, among others.
There will also be a lifetime achievement prize which will be awarded to individuals or film production companies whose long years of contribution to the African film industry has helped to develop it.
According to a statement issued by the GIAMA jury, this year has been very competitive.
“Our Best Motion Picture, Drama and other nominated film categories took viewers into a journey that questions and displays integrating cultural values of both modern and epic traditions.
“ While some made us cry, others made us laugh, with others embodying all the human emotions. A great film should inflict on its viewers,” the statement said.
The statement also said all the nominated films encompassed the qualities of excellence GIAMA endeavours to present in showing the growth and advancement of the African film industry in 2014.
