The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced three persons to a total of 62 years in prison for engaging in robbery. Mohammed Mumuni, alias Osman, Ali Mohammed alias Ali Kosei and Nasiru Mohammed Tanko, alias Gaza, were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
They were convicted on their own plea and sentenced by the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, last Monday.
Mohammed Mumuni and Ali Mohammed were each sentenced to 15 years for conspiracy and 20 years for robbery, while Nasiru Mohammed Tanko was sentenced to 22 years for robbery.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
Sentencing them, Mr Obiri said robbery, which has become rampant in the country, should be tackled with all the seriousness that it deserved for the society to be free.
He said the sentence was also to serve as a deterrent to the young ones who thought robbery was a lucrative job.
Facts of case
Prosecuting, Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuareka told the court that the complainant was a caterer and lived at Russia in Accra, while the convicts, Mohammed Mumuni, Ali Mohammed and Nasiru Mohammed, were porters and lived at Russia, Kokomba Market and Adabraka respectively.
He said on July 1, 2014, about 1:30 a.m, the complainant was baking meat pie in his kitchen when the convicts and two others, now at large, armed with a pistol and a machete, forcibly entered the complainant’s kitchen.
Mumuni pulled a pistol on the complainant and he became afraid and ran into his bedroom, leaving his Techno mobile phone, a Techno tablet phone and cash of GH¢800.00 on his table.
The convicts and their accomplices collected the items and the money and left the complainant’s premises brandishing the machete and threatening anyone who dared to approach them.
The complainant reported the matter to the police and during investigation, Mumuni was arrested at his hideout at Kokomba Market and when his kiosk was searched, the complainant’s Techno tablet mobile phone was found.
Mumuni admitted to the offences in his caution statement and mentioned his accomplices as Mohammed and Tanko.
Police intelligence led to the arrest of Ali Mohammed.
Mohammed, upon interrogation, admitted the offence in his caution statement. The prosecutor said on July 17, 2014, Nasiru Mohammed was arrested and he also admitted the offences in his caution statement.
