The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga has requested the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) to support the Ministry to establish a Youth & Sports Lottery to raise funds for sports infrastructure development.
A post on his Facebook page on Tuesday stated that the Acting Director General of the NLA, Brig. Gen. Martin K G Ahiaglo (Rtd) has promised to present the Minister “with available options within 2 weeks.”
He also indicated the completion of the Kaneshi Sports Complex in Accra “is prime candidate for the investment of funds raised from such activities.”
The Minister has promised to totally transform sports in Ghana after taking over the management of the Ministry about two weeks ago.
It has been said that sports development will lift hundreds of Ghanaians out of poverty but corruption is hindering growth in that sector.
Reports indicate that majority of existing sports facilities in the country are poorly managed.
It is unclear how this Youth and Sports Lottery will help improve infrastructure but similar schemes introduced by government did not yield positive results.
