Members of the Teachers Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana Medical School, Korle Bu, have embarked on an indefinite industrial action.
This according to them is to press home their demands for the college management to pay them all outstanding market premiums owed them since last year.
The group after several threats issued to the college authorities, demonstrated on Thursday to begin their indefinite industrial action.
The TEWU workers are determined not to go to work until the college managers implement the interim market premium since 2012.
They accused the college management of incompetence and deliberately refusing to give them what is rightfully theirs.
The leader of the protestors, Dominic Gyamfi who is also the secretary of Korle Bu TEWU stated that “several letters and meetings have gone on and nothing good came out, so we served them a notice that if by June ending they don’t implement this premium, we are going to advise ourselves accordingly, the only result the Registrar gave was to channel all grievances to Legon, and we saw that as unfortunate and incompetence on their part.”
According to Gyamfi, they organized a demonstration last year concerning the non-payment of the allowance but rescinded their decision after talks with management over the issue.
“They saw they are not going to pay everybody, but we are of the view that they should pay everybody. So today we are declaring an indefinite industrial action and it involves all forms of industrial actions that will facilitate the implementation of the hospital premium, otherwise we won’t come to work,” he stressed.
They however said the college management should be ready to take up responsibility for any unfortunate incidents that may occur as a result of the industrial action.
