The New Patriotic Party has decided on August,31 as the date for its special congress.
The First Vice Chairman of the party, Freddy Blay, told Citi News on Tuesday that the National Executive of the party had submitted a proposal to the National Council, requesting that the Special Congress be held on August, 30.
The Council, however, decided on August 31st as the date for the congress, where the number of presidential candidates aspirants for the party will be reduced to five, according to the party’s constitution.
Seven candidates, including former trade minister, Alan Kyeremanten and presidential candidate for the 2012 elections, Nana Akufo Addo submitted their nomination forms before the party’s deadline.
The NPP General Seccretary, Kwabena Agyapong, had earlier told Citi News that if all seven candidates passed the vetting process “then we will have to go according to our constitution” which states that “if more than five candidates filing, then we will have super delegates conference” to prune down the number to five.
The National Council of the NPP has also approved October, 18 as the date for the main elections to choose the party’s presidential candidate for the 2016 general elections.
