A Political Scientist at the University of Ghana says an active and engaging middle-class is critical to the development of every nation therefore; it is dangerous for government to disregard their concerns.

His comments follow the demonstration staged by a non-partisan middle-class group called Concerned Ghanaians for Responsible Governance on Tuesday against the worsening economic conditions in the country.

He is therefore advising government to urgently address the concerns of the middle class in the country.

According to Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darko, Tuesday’s protestors are individuals who qualify occupy political positions and so they are aware that there are measures which could be applied to change the fortunes of the nation.

“These are people who qualify to be Ministers of State and some of them even can be President. Some of them are self-made men and women, some of them have experiences and expertise in several frontiers…and so they are not people they can easily rubbish,” he explained.

He urged government not to dismiss their concerns because “the fundamental contract is between the government and the people.”

Dr. Aggrey-Darko further suggested that the government should take the protest “in good faith.”
