The Christian Council of Ghana has cautioned pastors and spiritual leaders not to spiritualize the Ebola disease.
The council says the disease has been scientifically proven and attempts to spiritualize and attribute it to the devil are likely to make matters worse.
“Ebola is for us a disease and when we accept that something is a disease we don’t run away, we confront it” said Reverend Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong general secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana.
He added that “we don’t want people to spiritualize it…whatever it is, it is a disease that scientifically has been proven.”
Reverend Dr. Opuni Frimpong was responding to questions on what the council who doing to assist the government to create awareness on the disease which has killed thousands in three West African countries namely Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
According to the Council, it is okay for people to pray against the virus but it is also imperative to listen to health officers who know how to deal with the disease.
The council says in an attempt to help spread the message on Ebola, it is being careful not to cause fear and panic.
It said it will initiate a partnership with the Ministry of Health for assistance on what to tell their church members about the disease.
On the directive by the Health Ministry’s warning against large gatherings, the Christian Council said it is yet to evaluate the Ministry’s position.
“We have only heard that certain directives have been given we are yet to receive a copy,” Reverend Opuni Frimpong said “when there is official position like that, we take time, we study it, we have technical people who advise us on such public policy directive then we will continue from there.”
