Ghana’s Andre Ayew’s goal against the United States in the 2014 World Cup failed in its bid to get the Best Goal Award of the Tournament as the gong went to James Rodriguez of Colombia.
The goal, Ayew’s first of his two in the competition, was scored in the 82nd minute from an Asamoah Gyan backheel, was among the contenders for the competition’s top strike but it could not outdo the wonderful volley scored by Colombia’s number 10 in the second round match against Uruguay.
Ayew’s goal was voted by the fans as the 15th best goal scored at the 2014 World Cup.
Fans were given the opportunity to vote for the top goal of the 2014 World Cup on the official FIFA site and they chose the Colombian’s strike as the most worthy successor to Diego Forlan’s swerving volley against South Africa four years ago.
Rodriguez ended up as the tournament’s top scorer with 6 goals and 2 assists from five matches played at World Cup.
Robin Van Persie’s header against Spain was voted the second best goal while two of Lionel Messi’s against Nigeria and Bosnia respectively were in the top 10.
Tim Cahill’s first-time left-footed volley against The Netherlands in their group meeting was sixth overall while David Luiz’s free kick against Colombia was fifth.
The goal from Mario Gotze that crowned Germany as the globe’s kings of football was voted fourth best but it was bettered by James Rodriguez’s cheeky chip over Eiji Kawashima in Colombia’s 4-0 win over the Asians.
Fans can visit the official FIFA site and have a look at the Top 15 of the World Cup voted for by the fans.
