The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stated that it is implementing a ‘Sanitation Rapid Response Scheme’ in the metropolis.
According to the assembly, this is line with its mission to keep the metropolis clean.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the sanitation scheme on Monday, the Chief Executive of the KMA, Kojo Bonsu, stated that the initiative will reduce the amount of litter created in the city.
He also revealed that the scheme would bring on board a considerable number of people so as to reduce the rate of unemployment that exists in the locality.
“Under this scheme, one hundred and fifty people have been recruited; they have been assigned to the various lorry terminals and vantage points in the metropolis to pick the litter especially plastics,” he said.
Mr. Bonsu highlighted that the plastics gathered would be transported to a recycling plant to generate useful material and “I must add that our emphasis will be on plastic waste. Whatever is gathered will be sold to plastic recycling companies as raw material.”
He also cautioned residents to “complement the effort” of the ‘gangs’ or groups to ensure that the vision of the sanitation scheme is realized.
The scheme is made up of five ‘gangs’ or groups that have been designated to clean up the litter that is created at terminals and public places in Kumasi.
