A large consignment of relief items has been dispatched to the northern region for onward distribution to disaster victims.
Deputy National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Sylvester Azantillow disclosed this in a Citi News interview.
He said, management of NADMO Northern Regional Secretariat took delivery of the items.
The Northern Regional NADMO Coordinator, Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma confirmed that about 16 districts in the region were affected by severe floods recorded in 2014.
Some of the affected districts are Tamale Township, Bimbila, Sagnarigu, Walewale, Nakpanduri, Savelugu, Nantong and Gushegu.
On Tuesday, April 29, 2014, a severe rainstorm accompanying a heavy downpour rendered hundreds of people in Tamale Township and its satellite communities homeless.
The affected communities included Gumbihini, Kukuo, Nyohini, Jakarayili, Kpanbegu and Sagnarigu.
The rainstorm also caused significant damages to portions of the official residences of the Northern Regional Minister and his Deputy.
Historically, the Northern Region has over the years been battered by heavy floods and ruthless rainstorms.
In 1999 and again in 2007, major floods devastated the three regions of the north where the victims are still counting their losses.
Available statistics by NADMO indicated that the 2007 floods affected close to 275,000 people in the three regions of the north.
