Hundreds of NDC youth in the Sissala East constituency last Monday embarked on a peaceful procession in Tumu to register their displeasure about the incarceration of two executives of the party and to welcome the convicts from their one week jail term.
The convicts, Razak Mahama the constituency secretary and Mujeeb Ayamga the deputy constituency treasurer were sentenced by a Tumu Magistrate court presided over by Salifu Abugiri Ayagiba(ESQ)for assaulting a former youth organizer of the NDC in the area.
But the decision of the court seemed not to have gone down well with the NDC constituency executives and the youth in particular who alleged the conviction of the two executives was politically motivated.
The youth, led by the Sissala East constituency chairman of the NDC Alhaji Musah Attia Ayamga and some other constituency executives clad in white bans and T-shirts with the inscription “Allah is the best judge” went through the principal streets of Tumu, to the Tumu chief’s palace and finally converged at the lorry park.
Addressing the NDC supporters, Alhaji Ayamga advised all NDC loyalists to remain focus to the development of the party in the area saying, “don’t be discouraged to work for the party because of what has happened. Those who are behind this think they can go away with it. They take their strength in disunity but it won’t be forever”.
He said the fundamental principles upon which the National Democratic Congress was built, which are probity and accountability are being relegated to the background in the constituency by people he referred to as “latter day saints.”
He noted that “our party is now polarized because people are now following their personal interests instead of our fundamental principles. Every party has structures and these structures should operate and be respected”
Though the chairman was not specific, he said “some people for the fact that they will power today think they are the rulers of today and therefore disregard the party structures and even we the executives. They think we are nothing because they have bigwigs in Wa and Accra who will always help them bulldoze their way through”.
One of the convicts, Razak Mahama, was full of praises for the heroic welcome given them by NDC supporters in the area.
He said their lawyers will appeal the verdict in an undisclosed higher court to prove their innocence.
