A fatal crash at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region has killed two top officials of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Hajia Adisa, Deputy Greater Accra Women’s Organizer of the NDC died together with an unnamed compatriot from the Volta Region after Saturday night’s deadly crash.
Reports say the two party officials were returning from a funeral in the Brong Ahafo Region when a speeding Yutong bus smashed their car.
The two officials were passengers in a vehicle owned by Vivian Ankrah, the Greater Accra Regional Women’s Organiser of the NDC, who survived the crash in spite of critical injuries.
Party officials say Ms. Ankrah and her injured driver have been admitted at an unnamed hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.
A Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, George Lawson, confirmed the fatal incident to Citi News but did not give details.
“I understand they were coming from Kintampo when the accident occurred,” he said. “This is a very sad moment for the party…”
“This is a big loss to all of us,” he added, describing the victims as “people who were playing a pivotal role as far as our democracy is concerned”.
Ghanaian roads are among some of the most dangerous in the world, recording thousands of fatal car crashes annually.
Contemporary statistics kept by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service show as many as 2,096 people died through motor accidents in 2013 alone. A further 12,655 were injured.
In January this year, news reports quoted a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Samuel Sasu-Mensah of the MTTD as saying the regional distribution of the dead in 2013 were: Accra (315), Tema (101), Eastern (221), Central (287), Western (170), Ashanti (282), Volta (127), Northern (167), Upper West (75), Upper East (61), and Brong Ahafo (252).
He said the statistics for the injured were: Accra (2,700), Tema (621), Eastern (2,663), Central (1,496), Western (917), Ashanti (1,495), Volta (824), Northern (668), Upper West (308), Upper East (74), and Brong Ahafo (889).
On Tuesday April 8, 2014, a former Presidential Spokesperson, Kwabena Agyepong, survived a terrible car accident on the Accra-Nsawam road.
Eyewitnesses told Citi News the Toyota Land Cruiser carrying Mr. Agyepong somersaulted several times while on its way to Kumasi, where the former Presidential Spokesperson was scheduled to address NPP delegates.
The accident happened just days before a national conference at which Mr. Agyepong was elected General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The crash involving Mr. Agyepong occurred barely a week after Nkrabea Effa Darteh, a former NPP MP, survived a similar accident while on a campaign tour.
