Two truck-loads of unwholesome and expired imported goods have been destroyed by the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Division at Agblekpui, near Aflao.
Estimated at several thousands of Ghana Cedis, the items included cartons of assorted soft and alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, pharmaceuticals, canned foods and vegetables and pornographic materials.
Others were bags of wheat flour, foot wears, electrical cables and fittings, chemicals and reagents and video and audio recordings and empty plastic receptacles used in fuel smuggling.
Environmental health, Police and Immigration officials and the press were witnesses of the exercise.
The officials had difficulty in controlling a crowd of civilians from nearby villages who unsuccessfully struggled to pick items from the blazing fires.
Rebecca Forson, Senior Revenue Officer of Customs in charge of State Warehouse at Aflao, who led the team, advised importers to respect regulations guiding imports to avoid losing their investments to seizure.
“Unlicensed importers not familiar with the regulations, must seek prior clearance to avoid falling foul of the law”, she said.
Madam Forson said the division will leave no stone unturned in protecting consumer interests in the handling of unwholesome goods.
