A High Court in Accra will on Wednesday hear a case in which an aspiring National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Nyamah, is suing the Finance Ministry for its indebtedness to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
Mr. Nyamah says since 2013, the Ministry has failed to pay monies into the GETFund as required by law adding that the Ministry owes the GETFund approximately GHC 687 million.
“Once you pay VAT or you pay tax, 2.5% of the Value Added Tax component goes into this account for the running of education so what where is the money in the first place?” he asked.
According to him, his investigations cannot trace the money; a situation which is affecting access to quality education, hence his decision to go to Court.
Mr. Nyamah told Citi News, he was hopeful that the lawsuit will “compel government to show us where the money is and seek the court to have the monies properly so that we can improve access to education.”
