The Metro Transport and Traffic Department, MTTD of the Ghana Police Service has tasked the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to provide drivers with car parks to ease the capital of unauthorized parking spots.
The MTTD is concerned about the increasing spate of lawlessness in the metropolis, adding that the situation is causing more pedestrian accidents.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Accra on Thursday, the Director General of the MTTD, ACP Angwutubuge Awuni gave the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) a two-month ultimatum to engage their drivers to stop such unlawful parking or face the department’s wrath.
He observed that “there is a lot of lorry parks springing up in unauthorized places…and it is coming up with some indiscipline that is being executed by drivers and this is creating a lot of inconvenience for people in the Metropolis.”
The Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Engineer May Obiri Yeboah on her part noted there is an urgent need to protect pedestrians.
She lamented over the frequency with which pedestrians are knocked down by vehicles therefore, “this is the time we need to take the bull by the horns and deal with the issue because there is so much chaos in the city.”
Engineer Yeboah maintained that it is high time pedestrians, passengers and motorists are protected.
