The Effutu Member of Parliament, Alex Afenyo-Markin is advising the Finance Minister to step in to help the Judgement Debt Commission unravel the alleged existence of a judgement debt account at the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
He observed that when public servants appear before the Commission, they are sometimes economical with the truth due to fear.
“When they leave matters of this nature to career civil servants or public servants and they out of fear are unable to provide consistent answers and they are economical with the truth, it gives wrong signals…” he opined.
The Bank of Ghana during an appearance before the Commission on Wednesday denied that there is a designated account for the payment of judgment debts to individuals and organizations.
This was however contrary to an earlier claim by officials of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department before the Commission that the account existed through which it directed payments of judgement debt.
Speaking on an Accra based Joy FM, Mr. Afenyo-Markin who is also a Financial Crime Lawyer insisted that the “Finance Minister or his Deputy should be able to provide answers.”
He also suggested that the contradictions between the two institutions call for the invitation of a “more senior person who can speak to policy issues to come back and address it properly.”
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption, Daniel Batidam has admonished Ghanaians to take interest in the ongoing proceedings at the Judgement Debt Commission.
According to him, the “revelations that are coming out…about the very institutions that we are looking up to as custodians of our public interest and public purse themselves are having challenges…”
