Stakeholders in the gold mining industry are calling for the introduction of stricter rules and reforms in the industry to ensure a tighter regulation regime.
Gold has been one of top three export earners for Ghana for years now.
The industry has seen lots of small scale miners’ troop in to engage in some illegal mining lately.
The Gold Exporters Association is requesting that similar reforms that recently were introduced by the bank of Ghana be replicated by the gold industry.
The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s only gold refinery, Asap Vasa, Henry Vroom Parker speaking to Citi Business News expressed his frustration at regulations in the industry indicating they are too loose.
“Just as the Bank of Ghana has come out to streamline things, we are also expecting that in the minerals sector so that it will be very difficult for the foreigners to come into the country to come and mine illegally” he said.
He continued saying, “for example when you go to India, it will be very difficult to trade in gold when you don’t have the requisite documentation. But in Ghana, nobody enforces that.”
