Energy Policy and Research firm, KITE says government will not be able to meet its planned target of producing 5000 mega watts of power by 2016.
Ghana currently produces about 2800 mega watts.
The Energy minister last year indicated that there are lined up projects intended to meet the 5000 mega watts target.
Energy analyst and Executive director at KITE, Ishmael Agyekum tells Citi business news, the plan is totally unachievable looking at the country’s current position.
“If we are around 2,800 mega watts and we need two years to build a new power plant it means we have less than two years to bring about 2,200 mega watts”, he said.
“I think it is just politics, they can’t do that.”
Agyekum adds that power cannot be stored and there will not be demand for it in Ghana.
“There will not be any demand for that in Ghana so we have to look at the West Africa Power pool and export the power. But 5000 mega watts is not achievable”, he added.
