A group of concerned Ghanaians have described National Security Coordinator, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey as a threat to security in the country and are therefore, calling on the President to dismiss him.
The group which is not an official group of the University of Ghana, Legon is made up of members of the University community, parents of students at the school, friends and alumni of the University, and peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of Ghana both at home and abroad
They are collecting signatures online and on hardcopy to support their demand.
The online petition was initiated after the National security Coordinator ordered the demolition of the toll booth under construction at the Okponglo entrance of the University.
He defended his action saying, the toll booth was a public nuisance adding that there was no need for the Vice Chancellor to be notified because the matter was practical not strategic.
The spokesperson for the group, Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show explained that members of the group are very worried about the conduct of Colonel Larry Gbevlo Lartey therefore “he should be removed from office.”
She indicated that his action sends “a very bad signal and it frightens us that the person who is in an office that should be protecting our security is actually threatening our security…people have been disturbed.”
Prof. Ampofo disclosed that her colleague Professors abroad are questioning whether to send down their international students to study at Legon this year adding that the incident “has given a very bad picture. We have gone through these kinds of experiences in the past; we don’t want to go back.”
