Former Mayor of Accra, Nat Nunoo Amarteifio has rejected suggestions that the current Mayor, Alfred Vanderpuye be dismissed following the collapse of some high rise buildings in the capital.
He described the seeming failure of the AMA boss to develop and maintain law and order in the city coupled with the frequent calls for his dismissal as an “occupational hazard.”
“No; I don’t believe that Oko’s head should roll because Oko has seen enough in this city where his head would have been rolled for various reasons…No; that is not a sensible solution,” he opined.
In the early hours of last Wednesday, a six-storey hotel building under construction at Nii Boi Town collapsed killing one and injuring another.
In 2012, another six-storey building housing the Melcom shopping mall at Achimota also collapsed killing 14 and injuring several others.
These incidents have raised questions regarding the competency and efficiency of building inspectors at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) who are responsible for checking haphazard constructions within the city.
Speaking on Citi FM’s the Big Issue, Mr. Amarteifio pointed out that there is an apparent failure in the structure of the AMA and suggested that it will be better to access the workings of the Assembly “to see where appropriate sacrifices have to be made.”
This he said will educate others and also send a message that “we will no longer tolerate this.”
