Medeama Sporting Club heaved a sigh of relief on Saturday in Fez after holding off the challenge of Morrrocan side Mas Fez in the second leg of the second qualifying round of the Confederations Cup to make to the next round.
Despite losing the tie by two goals to one on the night, the Yellow and Mauves made it to the next round via a 4-2 aggregate on the back of a 3-0 home victory last weekend in Essipong.
And the club is grateful to its management, fans and sponsors for the support during the match.
” We have to thank God for this feat and we have to thank our club president, Moses Armah, for being with us in Morocco. Our sponsors, Goldfields Ghana and the Ghana Manganese Company, were also very supportive and we show our gratitude to them.
The fans were also great and we thank them especially for cheering us during a very challenging encounter away from home”, said Ebenezer Aidoo, the club’s Public Relations Officer, to Citi Sports in an interview after the match.
The match was really difficult especially as Medeama conceded a goal in the first half to give a boost to the home team but qualification was sealed when a Kabiru Moro cross was deflected into the goal by Mohammed Ali Bamaamar. Mas Fez scored again in the second half but it was not enough to stop the Ghanaians.
Aidoo admitted that there were some nervous moments during the game but Medeama held firm to move forward.
” The first half had some very worrying times because we were under a lot of pressure.
It was obvious they wanted to get an early goal and they worked hard to get it. We managed to hold them off but we conceded at a point and that left us really worried.
However, we came back in the second half and got the break and that calmed us all down and we made it in the end.”
Medeama will, in the next round, play against Zambian side, Zesco, who beat Ferroviario Beira of Mozambique by a lone goal to qualify.
