Government has denied reports that President John Mahama has condemned activities of the galamsey taskforce which he set up to fight the illegal activities.

A media report quoted the President as saying; illegal miners are in business to make a living and must not be chased out by the Police and Military.

Speaking in his first radio interview on the Citi Breakfast Show however, Director of Communication at the Presidency, Ben Dotse Malor said the President rather urged traditional authorities to join forces in combating the activities of the ‘galamseyers’.

He described the President as a parent “who has to discipline a child with a cane, not to condone corporal punishment.”

Mr. Malor bemoaned the current state of the Offin River saying, “the Offin River basically has been killed. The water which used to be clear…this water is now brown” adding that the President requested that the residents “shouldn’t wait until we get a taskforce.”

He commended the progress the President’s taskforce made in checking and possibly minimizing galamsey activities across the country.
