The 59th Independence Day celebration was observed at the various regional and district capitals throughout the country.
In the Ashanti region, correspondent, Lauretta Tima reported that hundreds participated in the parade which was held at the Jubilee Park.
She said the event had in attendance, the regional minister, Alexander Ackon, Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, Ashanti regional police commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye among others.
Central Region
In the Central Region, Citi News’ correspondent, Akwasi Koranteng reported that school children drawn from over 55 schools in the Agona West Municipality converged on the Agona Sports stadium to mark the celebration.
He said the schools included 28 primary schools, 19 JHS and 5 SHS who marched in honour of their country.
The MCE of Agona West used the occasion to tout government’s achievements in the educational sector.
Northern Region
In the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, the District Director of Education, Hajia Alima Friko, bemoaned the effect of the imposition of curfew on the town on education.
Citi News’ correspondent, Aminu Mohammed quoted Hajia Alima as saying the curfew affected the performance of pupils in the district in last year’s BECE results.
She revealed that the district’s overall performance was nothing to write home about and attributed it to the curfew.
The district in the 2013/2014 academic year was 5th in the whole country with a pass rate of 71.65%, but the story is different in last year’s performance. The district ‘s performance was just 8.01 percent.
She therefore appealed to President John Dramani Mahama through the district security council to lift the curfew entirely or review it so that students can have freedom to study in order to enhance the performance.
Hundreds of school children and security personnel took part in this year’s anniversary.
