Fulani herdsmen living in the Jirapa District of the Upper West Region are to be registered formally and given tags for easy identification.
The exercise, which is to be carried out by the District Assembly, formed part of measures to control the activities of the Fulani herdsmen in the district.
The decision was taken at a meeting between the Jirapa District Chief Executive (DCE), Madam Vivien-Nelly Kunko, and chiefs and opinion leaders in the district.
The meeting discussed some issues considered to be a threat to security in the district of which the menace of Fulani herdsmen and illegal small scale mining also known as “galamsey” were key on the agenda.
Madam Kunko was of the view that a proper registration and tagging of all Fulani herdsmen in the district would enhance their easy identification.
The meeting also agreed that chiefs, Unit Committee and Assembly members should collaborate effectively with the security agencies to flush out “galamsey” operators in the district.
