{"id":99440,"date":"2015-03-14T17:12:14","date_gmt":"2015-03-14T17:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=99440"},"modified":"2015-03-14T17:12:14","modified_gmt":"2015-03-14T17:12:14","slug":"74-year-old-indian-nun-gang-raped-in-convent-school-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/03\/74-year-old-indian-nun-gang-raped-in-convent-school-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"74-year-old Indian nun gang-raped in convent school attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\" class=\"introduction\">Police in eastern India are searching for a group of six men who gang-raped an elderly nun in West Bengal.<\/p>\n<p>The men ransacked the convent school in Ranaghat early on Saturday morning and stole money before entering the convent itself.<\/p>\n<p>The 74-year-old nun is now recovering in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Christian groups have recently held protests in the Indian capital, Delhi, saying they are being targeted and demanding better protection.<\/p>\n<p>The Archbishop of Calcutta, Thomas d&#8217;Souza, told the BBC that security cameras inside the Convent of Jesus and Mary School show the faces of the six men who carried out the assault.<\/p>\n<p>They first ransacked the school principal&#8217;s office and classrooms before entering the convent itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are only three Sisters in the community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One sister was molested badly. The other two, and a guard, were tied to chairs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/80797000\/jpg\/_80797059_80797058.jpg\" alt=\"A burnt crucifix stands at the altar of St. Sebastian&quot;s Church after a fire destroyed the church on Monday, in New Delhi, India, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014.\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/>Several churches in Delhi have been attacked in recent months.<\/div>\n<p>The men also stole money from the school, he said, vandalised the chapel, broke open the tabernacle and took away the ciborium, the sacred vessel used during Mass.<\/p>\n<p>The school is well-known and has been open for 19 years, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has condemned the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes at a time of growing concern about sexual violence against women and there has been increased media reporting of rapes and assaults.<\/p>\n<p>The background to this attack is not yet clear.
