The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey wants government to urgently review how state prosecutors are appointed since according to him; it is one of the main reasons the state fails in many its court cases.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xHZYNj7bCM9otAOCkGz75KjvckqXICw4″]State prosecutors have been criticized for losing major government cases which some say undermines the justice delivery system in the country.

Addressing a symposium on the “Justice for all” Program, organised by Help Law Ghana, the former Attorney General believes the current system where the right to prosecute is given to institutions like the Police and not individuals is problematic, hence his call.

He explained that some Police persons with political affiliation “get transferred to the politician position then becomes a prosecutor” explaining that such instances are dangerous because it does not auger well for the state.

He noted that in such situations “it is the person who is there who decides who goes to that department, it depends on whether he like you are doesn’t like you.”

"woyome

His suggestion follows the acquittal and discharge of businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome who has been accused of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretense for receiving a controversial GH¢51 million as judgment debt.

Meanwhile, former President Jerry John Rawlings has lambasted the state prosecutors for doing what he says is a “shoddy job” with the case.

“I have insisted that state prosecution has been always been suspicious because we don’t know whose interests they are serving .It is obvious that there was no work done in this case and therefore making the case for Woyome and his lawyers very easy,” he stated.
