An Assembly Member of Aspirant for Nungua North Estates, Godfred Hammond has said the Electoral Commission’s(EC) ruling will not augur well for aspirants considering the amount of money they have spent on their campaigns.

The District Assembly elections which was scheduled to begin on March 3, 2015 has been suspended following the Supreme Court’s order.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xhoZIaNvLIHR6p4a6WkLrtuiBiNUAflP”]Speaking on Eyewitness News,Hammond said: “We spent lots of money printing posters and campaigning and this is going to start all over again? It is a shame…”

He pointed out that aspirants will have to go through the cumbersome process of starting their campaigns all over again.

Hammond believes the EC would not have lost the case if their lawyers had been more diligent.

“I received the ruling with mixed feeling, however, I am thinking the lawyers at EC are sleeping because this could have been avoided…”

How it all began

The EC was dragged to court by an aspiring Assembly man, Benjamin Eyi Mensah, represented by lawyer Alex Afenyo Markin.

A fisherman, Eyi Mensah, who filed the writ said he was denied an opportunity to file his nomination despite meeting all conditions to contest adding that the EC closed nominations before the maturation of the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 85.

The Supreme Court subsequently ordered the EC to stop running adverts of the elections ahead of the ruling on Friday.

The court contended that it was not right for the Commission to continue advertising the election when there was a case challenging the legality of the processes.

On Friday, the court finally gave its ruling and called off the District Assembly elections off.
