{"id":94574,"date":"2015-02-26T13:18:58","date_gmt":"2015-02-26T13:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=94574"},"modified":"2015-02-26T13:18:58","modified_gmt":"2015-02-26T13:18:58","slug":"well-sanction-heads-of-institutions-infringing-on-rights-of-muslims-mahama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/02\/well-sanction-heads-of-institutions-infringing-on-rights-of-muslims-mahama\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ll sanction heads of institutions infringing on rights of Muslims &#8211; Mahama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Mahama has said government will sanction heads of institutions who prevent Muslim women from wearing hijabs at work places and schools.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reports indicated that women and girls <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/20\/photos-muslims-in-western-region-demonstrate-over-discrimination\/#sthash.h76xLoeA.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">were being <\/a>prevented from wearing\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>their hijabs, a traditional scarf worn by Muslim women to cover their hair and neck and sometimes their face, to work and in schools.<\/p>\n<p>The situation compelled the Muslim community in the Western to <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/02\/20\/photos-muslims-in-western-region-demonstrate-over-discrimination\/#sthash.aSxuLBRf.n9hYqGFW.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>protest what they<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>called human right abuses of Muslims in the country.<\/p>\n<p>However President Mahama on Thursday said it is wrong for children to prevent Muslim women from wearing hijab or nuns from wearing their habits to work or school.<\/p>\n<p>He remarked that \u201cappropriate sanctions\u201d will be taken against any head of institution who acts contrary to the constuitional provisions of Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cconstitution in Article 21, Clause 1, guarantees the freedom of religion and the freedom to manifest one\u2019s religious beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This not the first time government has condemned the act of preventing Muslims from wearing their hijabs in schools and at work places.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Communication earlier issued a statement, instructing heads of institutions to allow Muslim women to wear their hijabs to work or school.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by the Minister of Communications Edward Omane Boamah said \u201cwe consider it not only as religious intolerance, but also a breach of the 1992 Constitution of the republic of Ghana, for Muslim students to be forced to take off their hijabs in schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn much the same way, it is unacceptable for Muslim students to be forced to attend church services in schools, especially when it seeks to introduce those students to a religion, which they may not subscribe to&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Mahama has said government will sanction heads of institutions who prevent Muslim women from wearing hijabs at work places and schools.
