The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has rejected claims that it is planning to disrupt the much touted ‘Thank you Mahama’ procession being organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region.

The NDC in the Ashanti region on Monday cancelled its demonstration aimed at thanking president Mahama for initiating unprecedented development projects in the area.

[contextly_sidebar id=”p4sU0f15oVVnu6HVEXJoFnIpfe2eueo8″]The exercise which was slated for Tuesday February 24, 2015 was cancelled because the NDC says they suspect the NPP members in the region are planning to disrupt the demonstration.

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Raymond Tandoh told Citi News that intelligence they have picked up indicates that the NPP may disrupt the procession.

“It was because of security reasons,” he said adding that “Intelligence we are picking shows that it is not good for us to host the march tomorrow that is why we have postponed it. It is likely that Wontumi [NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman] and his people will try to disrupt us that is why we have decided to postpone it and organize ourselves very well. I think it’s good for us and people in the Ashanti Region,” he added.

Ridiculous allegations

But speaking on Eyewitness News, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sam Pyne described the allegations as ridiculous.

“This is a ridiculous alibi by the NDC, they knew they were never going to have the numbers and if they really meant what they wanted to do, they could have gone ahead with it. In this era when people are losing their jobs and people are dying because of dumsor… and you want to celebrate a president that no one want to hear the name.”

He stated that “It’s just an attempt to dodge their failure, that is why they are telling the world that we have something against them.”

“We have nothing against them,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the NPP in the Ashanti Region has also set February 25, 2015 to demonstrate against the government in relation to the power crisis as well as the worsening economic situation in the country.

Sam Pyne noted that they are ready for the demonstration.

“We have two key things for the demonstration….the energy situation is a solvable situation that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. We are also looking at the fuel prices that it should be sold at GH¢5 per gallon,” he added.
