{"id":84742,"date":"2015-01-22T14:30:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T14:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=84742"},"modified":"2015-01-22T14:11:59","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T14:11:59","slug":"construction-company-sacks-workers-joining-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/01\/construction-company-sacks-workers-joining-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction Company sacks workers for joining union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nine\u00a0workers of SKARM Construction and Engineering Services Limited in Takoradi have been sacked for joining a union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The nine believed to be executives of the company\u2019s local union are said to have breached their agreement with the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;pc6rQ8f0FEowkaTQU9eeBnrQcbnvlOfL&#8221;]However speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> the Secretary of the union, Charles Ocran denied signing any contract with the company that bars them from joining any union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said, \u201cAfter we served the 6 months maximum probation period we were not given any contract form so we decided to talk to management about it,\u201d adding tht all attempts to engage management of the company for discussions on their appointment letters proved futile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe do not have any contract; with SKARM nor have seen one. Some of us have worked with the company for more than five years. The only document we have from the company is our monthly pay slips,\u201d he fumed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/sacked-workers-of-SKARM-Construction.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84749\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/sacked-workers-of-SKARM-Construction.jpg\" alt=\"sacked workers of SKARM Construction\" width=\"768\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The senior industrial relations officer for construction and building materials workers union, Richard Asamoah Mensah told <strong>Citi News<\/strong> that \u00a0the workers have been victimized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the union had on several occasions requested to meet management of the company but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the nine affected workers headed for work on Wednesday morning only to be asked to stay outside the premises of the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/sacked-workers-of-SKARM-Construction-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84747\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/sacked-workers-of-SKARM-Construction-3.jpg\" alt=\"sacked workers of SKARM Construction (3)\" width=\"768\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The matter has been reported to the Western Regional Labour officer, Madam Betty Acquah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She admitted dealing with a matter involving SKARM Construction and Engineering Services Limited and workers over unionization when she arrived at the site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After speaking with management, she told the workers to head for the national labour commission or the law court since the two factions are divided over matter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe employer said he has not declared them redundant but has moved into a termination clause on their contract agreement. Management told me they do not have a copy of the contract when I asked to see one.
