Ghana’s cocoa industry regulator, COCOBOD has told Citi Business News it is uncertain on whether it will review upwards the producer price for cocoa for this year.

The Producer Price Review Committee last year maintained the producer price of cocoa at 3, 392 Ghana cedis per ton due to a drop in the price of cocoa on the world market.

The minority in parliament earlier warned that maintaining the producer price may encourage smuggling of cocoa from Ghana to neighboring Cote D’Ivoire and Togo.

COCOBOD’s spokesperson Noah Ameyah told Citi Business News it will be difficult to determine the review in price since the committee has not met.

“When they meet they will be look at the stakes and will adjust or retain the producer price that is currently running.

So we will not be able to say farmers should expect an increase in producer price,” Ameyah said.

According to him, “It will come from the committee. The committee is still taking data. We run thirty-two to thirty-four weeks and we are eighteen weeks and so we are not ready to review. They will look at the market conditions and all other conditions”.
