Your smartphone selfies look horrible. It’s true and you know it. It’s not your fault, it’s your smartphone’s.

Almost all smartphones have a low-res front-facing camera with 1 to 2-megapixels. It’s laughable how little they’ve improved compared to how great the cameras on the backside have gotten.

The HTC Desire Eye sees your phone’s grainy selfies and raises you its 13-megapixel selfies. HTC says it’s time for high-quality phone selfies that don’t compromise on resolution.

Despite the mid-tier Desire branding and $149.99 (with two-year contract) price, the Desire Eye actually packs impressive hardware including a sharp 5.2-inch (1,920 x 1,080 resolution) display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB with a microSD card.

Unlike on other phones, Android 4.4.4 “KitKat” with HTC’s own Sense 6 UI and the BlinkFeed news aggregator are lightweight and easy on the eyes. I didn’t find HTC’s own software customizations to bog Android down, which is great.

The powerful hardware and smooth software works out to a phone that roars all the time; it even runs 3D games like Dead Trigger 2 really well.

Plastic phone done right

Plastic smartphones get a lot bad rap these days. We all want a device with the premium and luxury feels; something that screams look at my fabulous phone.

The Desire Eye is neither flimsy or creaky. Its white and red two-tone design is eye-catching among black and silver devices. Because HTC used an injection-molded “zero gap” design, there are no cracks or seams where the two colored plastics meet.
