{"id":78913,"date":"2015-01-03T05:35:53","date_gmt":"2015-01-03T05:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=78913"},"modified":"2015-01-03T06:55:08","modified_gmt":"2015-01-03T06:55:08","slug":"mahama-cant-transform-economy-in-12-months-economist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/01\/mahama-cant-transform-economy-in-12-months-economist\/","title":{"rendered":"Mahama can&#8217;t transform economy in 12 months &#8211; Economist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Economist and the Head of the Finance Department at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Godfred Bokpin has downplayed President Mahama\u2019s assurance that Ghana\u2019s economy will be turned around in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Bokpin, 12 months is just not enough to turn the fortunes of the economy around.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;1NXXIIGKGIBy8Hl9RERDnXYv2fJpFMNP&#8221;]President Mahama in his New Year message to the country promised a transformational year which will see a positive change in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>However speaking in an interview with\u00a0<strong>Citi News,<\/strong> Dr. Bokpin said the President\u2019s assurance will not see the light of day since the reality on the grounds does not support his claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have heard those statements, promises and commitments a number of times but we have missed them so it is very difficult to say that yes this year will be a major turn around,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, government has not put in place the necessary structural reforms to ensure a transformation in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not see a major or significant turn around in the economy this year because&#8230; the fundamentals are not right, the kind of structural adjustment, realignment that we needed to do, 12 months is too short for such a thing to take place,\u201d Bokpin stated.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, government faced intense criticism due to various economic challenges such as the huge budget deficit, high inflation rate among others.<\/p>\n<p>President Mahama however, in his new year message to Ghanaians revealed that he will take measures to resolve those challenges.<\/p>\n<p>He stated among other things that the <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/01\/01\/will-banish-dumsor-forever-mahama\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>inconsistent power supply among others<\/strong><\/span><\/a> will soon end but some stakeholders in the country are pessimistic his prediction will become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Energy think-tank African Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) has also cast doubts over President John Mahama\u2019s promise to <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/01\/02\/mahamas-dumsor-promise-wet-dream-acep\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>&#8220;banish\u201d the erratic power supply<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>in the country<a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/01\/02\/mahamas-dumsor-promise-wet-dream-acep\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> describing it as a \u201cwet dream.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to ACEP, the needed capital and infrastructural developments have not been put in place to ensure that the Presidents assurances would see the light of day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Economist and the Head of the Finance Department at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Godfred Bokpin has downplayed President Mahama\u2019s assurance that Ghana\u2019s economy will be turned around in 2015.
