The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) says it will review the prices of transport fares on January 7, 2015.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Ged8OZm3QImCXiACrVlIKArjtfMvih5E”]A statement signed by GPRTU’s General Secretary, Stephen Okudzeto said although the reduction of fuel prices is taking effect on January 1, 2015, the union is on a short break and will accordingly review its prices upon resumption.

The GPRTU has thus appealed to the general public to exercise restraint with public transport operators until January 7 when new prices will be announced.

The Union also commended the government for the reduction, stating that it will help reduce their operational cost.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on December 31, 2014 announced a 10% reduction in the prices of petroleum products.

Following weeks of incessant demands by Ghanaians for a drastic reduction in petroleum prices, the NPA met on Tuesday for a review.

The calls came on the back of the sharp decline in crude oil prices on the world market.

But the NPA refused to adjust petroleum prices to reflect the world market price.

The authority said due to its huge indebtedness to the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs), it was using the opportunity to gather funds to pay off its debt of about GHC 412 million.

So far, GHC 200 million has been paid to the BDCs.
