The National Security Council Secretariat has declared the lands around the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) security zones with immediate effect.

The KIA boundaries have thus been redefined to curtail further encroachment from humans and stray animals, a statement from the Secretariat said.

The statement, signed by one Col. E.W.K. Nibo (Rtd) indicated that the massive pressure on the KIA land by private developers is posing grave threat to flight operations.

“This trend has so far caused massive encroachment on the airport environment posing a grave threat to flight operations and creating hazards such as bird strikes and stray animals on the runway,” the statement explained.

Col. Nibo (Rtd) pointed out that private developers have grossly disregarded a Land Commission public notice in 1998 “aimed at halting all further developments on the KIA acquisition in order to promote the airport’s land use objectives and safety and security of aviation operations.”

This, he said has resulted in serious hazards in airport operations.

The National Security Council Secretariat therefore admonished all interested parties who are in doubt about where his or her development falls to call the Land Commission for clarification.
