{"id":71843,"date":"2014-12-06T10:44:36","date_gmt":"2014-12-06T10:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=71843"},"modified":"2014-12-06T10:56:49","modified_gmt":"2014-12-06T10:56:49","slug":"free-shs-is-not-to-promote-our-political-agenda-ablakwa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/12\/free-shs-is-not-to-promote-our-political-agenda-ablakwa\/","title":{"rendered":"Free SHS is not to promote our political agenda &#8211; Ablakwa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Deputy Minister of Education, Okudzeto Ablakwa has insisted that government\u2019s Free Senior High School (SHS) programme was not engineered by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for political gains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it is about political gain we would have just announced that it would have covered a special group of people,\u201d he said,\u00a0Speaking on Joy FM.<\/p>\n<p>The free SHS policy was the main campaign message of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 general elections; a policy which was criticized by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;telfrbs0cVrqkCuodTT60yMmO0JnjuGx&#8221;]But President John Mahama in his 2014 State of the Nation address announced that his administration was going to introduce a progressive free SHS education.<\/p>\n<p>His announcement <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/02\/26\/mahamas-free-shs-aimed-at-denying-npp-campaign-message-in-2016-gabby\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>has received wide spread criticism<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>from different quarters while some teacher unions have also expressed grave concerns that the policy will affect the quality of education.<\/p>\n<p>The government nonetheless is putting measures in place to begin the implementation of the policy in January 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Abakwa said the programme was not is not designed to\u00a0lure the electorates to endorse the candidature of President John Mahama in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n<p>He clarified that it was just a fulfilment of government\u2019s campaign promise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have said that this is a just a general programme. We are working on the policy issue.
