{"id":714,"date":"2014-02-18T09:08:15","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T09:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/?p=714"},"modified":"2014-02-18T09:08:15","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T09:08:15","slug":"national-security-pulls-down-ug-toll-booth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/02\/national-security-pulls-down-ug-toll-booth\/","title":{"rendered":"National Security pulls down UG toll booth"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-715\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1959223_668433469861855_365437680_n1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-715\" alt=\"The demolished toll booth at legon\" src=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1959223_668433469861855_365437680_n1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The demolished toll booth at legon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some personnel of the National Security have demolished the toll booth around the Okponglo entrance of the University of Ghana, Legon.<\/p>\n<p>The demolition exercise is said to have been carried out in the early hours of Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the incident on the <b>Citi Breakfast Show<\/b>, the head of security at the University, ACP Adamu Salifu stated that when he arrived at the scene around \u201c1:30am, the demolition had already been done and those who did it were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The national security personnel were said to have been accompanied by armed policemen \u201cand with their bulldozers, they pulled it down\u2026I was told it took them about 5 to 10 minutes and they were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He however indicated that the tolls are still being charged despite the removal of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>The decision by the University authority to charge tolls has become a serious bone of contention regarding its legality.<\/p>\n<p>The Student Representative Council (SRC) kicked against the move and subsequently petitioned Parliament to investigate the matter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1912250_668432566528612_787002518_n1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-716\" alt=\"UG toll booth\" src=\"http:\/\/citi.hatuasolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1912250_668432566528612_787002518_n1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads after investigating the matter declared that the school authorities had the right to charge the tolls after meeting with the Vice Chancellor and the Road Minister.<\/p>\n<p>The Vice-Chairman of the Transport Committee, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie said the University acted within the law in its imposition of tolls for the use of its roads.<\/p>\n<p>Two students have also sued the school over the decision to charge tolls at the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some personnel of the National Security have demolished the toll booth around the Okponglo entrance of the University of Ghana, Legon.
