{"id":71025,"date":"2014-12-04T10:30:35","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T10:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=71025"},"modified":"2014-12-04T10:44:27","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T10:44:27","slug":"our-hands-are-tied-npa-tells-taxi-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/12\/our-hands-are-tied-npa-tells-taxi-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Our hands are tied &#8211; NPA tells taxi drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has said there is nothing it can do to meet the demands of the taxi drivers in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;vCznhpUxsBDV4BscqDIZ86sc6wHNYGrr&#8221;]\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/12\/03\/taxi-drivers-demonstrate-against-government-pictures\/\" target=\"_blank\">Taxi drivers demonstrated against what they described as hardship<\/a><\/strong><\/span> imposed on them by the recent fuel price hikes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/11\/19\/govt-impose-17-5-petroleum-products\/\" target=\"_blank\">decision to impose a 17.5 tax on petroleum products<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0faced lots of\u00a0 criticism by many Ghanaians who called on the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/11\/24\/implementation-of-17-5-petroleum-tax-bill-illegal-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>government to reverse the decision<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the NPA the imposition will only result in a 3 percent increase in petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking in an interview to <strong>Citi News,<\/strong> the \u00a0Head of Public Affairs at the NPA,\u00a0 Yaro Kasambata said the NPA can do little about the situation<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that \u201cwe appreciate that we could have given more reduction than we did when we issued the 2 percent reduction but we have also have to come to this point because we have mentioned to the public and to all our stakeholders,that it is a very difficult part that the NPA has to take knowing \u00a0prices are dropping at the world market and we have to maintain prices at the pump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He disclosed that the move was to prevent the disruption of fuel supplies in the country, adding that \u201cIt was a very difficult decision for the NPA but we have no option because the monies owed the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies are monies that have to\u00a0 be paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further argued that if this debt was not payed that there will be a scarcity in fuel supplies if money owed to the BDC are not paid adding that \u201c if we don\u2019t pay the debt it means that we are leaving everything to chance,events will unfold under our very eyes especially in this festive season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stressed that the decision taken by the authority and management of NPA was in the interest of the country, adding \u201cwe don\u2019t want to leave the consumer and the public to this situation and so we have to take this road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Patricia Conteh\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has said there is nothing it can do to meet the demands of the taxi drivers in the country.
