The Board Chairman of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ambassador Lee Ocran has disclosed that a government institution owes the authority about of GHc700 million.<\/p>\n
Though he failed to mention the name of the institution, he said they will soon resort to the court to retrieve their money.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe are threatening to take a state institution that owes the VRA over GHC 700 million to court if they don\u2019t pay up. I am going to chase everybody for the monies. I won\u2019t mention their names,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”Cwd9xfLyYXq56YDlyfBmWHNSPXn5lVe3″]His statement follows recent revelations made by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), that various institutions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in the country including the Baba Yara Sports Stadium<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and\u00a0Parliament owe them huge sums of monies<\/strong><\/a><\/span> which they say is affecting their service delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n Ambassador Lee Ocran who was speaking in an interview on Accra based radio Gold, observed that nonpayment of debt by public institutions has doubled the woes of VRA.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is why VRA has a problem. VRA used to be the most liquid institution in Ghana,\u201d he opined.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere are private institutions, mines that owe VRA, they are not paying. There is one owned by a quasi-state institution; they owe us one million barrels of oil. I told their managing director I will take my oil. VRA is cashtrapped. VALCO owes us, Sonun Asogli owes, when you chase them they say ECG has not paid us so we can\u2019t pay you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n On how to retrieve such monies, Ambassador Ocran said apart from dragging them to court he assured that \u00a0\u201cwe are trying to do inter agency accounting to sought out this thing.”<\/span><\/p>\n Ambassador Lee Ocran who is vying for the Vice Chairmanship slot in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was optimistic of winning the position citing his in-depth knowledge and previous experience in the party.<\/span><\/p>\n
