{"id":69446,"date":"2014-11-28T06:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-11-28T06:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=69446"},"modified":"2014-11-28T05:52:41","modified_gmt":"2014-11-28T05:52:41","slug":"nayele-may-have-a-reduced-jail-term-lawyer-oppong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/11\/nayele-may-have-a-reduced-jail-term-lawyer-oppong\/","title":{"rendered":"Nayele Ametefeh may get a reduced jail term \u2013 Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The woman who was\u00a0arrested for carrying cocaine into the UK, Ruby Appiah, alias Nayele Ametefe,\u00a0may get a reduced jail term because she pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against her on Thursday, a\u00a0private legal practitioner, Yaw Oppong has suggested.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nayele Ametefeh, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/11\/16\/ghanaian-woman-busted-for-carrying-cocaine\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>was arrested at the Heahthrow Airport<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0with about 12 kilograms of cocaine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;cP30yU9ZgFgQDXlrf9fKkjNZYhwn86Zv&#8221;]When she appeared \u00a0before the Crown Court in UK on Thursday, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/11\/27\/nayele-ametefe-pleads-guilty-in-uk-court\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Nayele Ametefeh pleaded guilty<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. to the charge of carrying cocaine to the UK.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The woman was facing a possible 15 year jail term or more if she had pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But speaking on\u00a0<strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, Lawyer Oppong explained that \u201cwhen a person is arrested and charged with an offence and presented to court for trial, the principle is that it is the prosecutor or the state that has the duty to establish that a person has committed an offence without any reasonable doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said in this case \u201cthe person said that I am guilty so there is nothing left for the prosecution to prove and then the court can go on and read the sentence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-20141127-WA0000-620x3301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69121 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-20141127-WA0000-620x3301.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20141127-WA0000-620x330\" width=\"620\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-20141127-WA0000-620x3301.jpg 620w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG-20141127-WA0000-620x3301-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to\u00a0the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hannah Tetteh, Ms Ametefe had told Ghana&#8217;s High Commission in the UK that she thought the package she was carrying was &#8220;gold and not cocaine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This fueled speculations that Ms Ametefe was likely to plead not guilty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But following yesterday&#8217;s developments, lawyer Oppong said, \u201cThe court has to determine what will be appropriate punishment because you have not wasted the courts time and public funds for going through trials for many months or years. What the court cannot do is convict or sentence you below the number of estimated number of years or period.
