{"id":69271,"date":"2014-11-28T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2014-11-28T10:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=69271"},"modified":"2014-11-27T20:53:44","modified_gmt":"2014-11-27T20:53:44","slug":"85000-e-waste-recycling-plant-abandoned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/11\/85000-e-waste-recycling-plant-abandoned\/","title":{"rendered":"$85,000 e-waste recycling plant abandoned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An e-waste recycling plant at Agbogbloshie in Accra has been abandoned, two months after its establishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Akwasi Opong-Fosu made the observation during a visit to the facility on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scavengers in in the area continue to use the old way of extracting copper metals from electronic waste instead of patronizing the facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;FuLZfmscmjQCx8LCRx7QDq8AIrWxpfGV&#8221;]Agbogboloshie; a former wetland \u00a0now hosts <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/04\/07\/agbogbloshie-most-toxic-e-waste-dump-site-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>the world\u2019s largest electronic waste dumping site<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The issue has been a source of worry to residents in the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to have the situation resolved, the government in collaboration with Black Smith Institute, an international non-profit organization, constructed an e-waste plant at a cost of $85,000 in the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The facility which is equipped with four automated machines can extract wires from plastic coated cables from the e-waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr Opong-Fosu however assured that they will have an emergency meeting with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to bring the issue of e-waste to an end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He intimated that the \u201cfacility has been established but the continued burning of cables to extract copper is still ongoing and now the facility is under-utilized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, a scrap dealer, Suleiman who spoke to Daily Graphic denied that the facility had been abandoned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said in a day, about 30 scrap dealers visited the facility and had their metals scrapped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a related development, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah has assured that Agbogbloshie popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/10\/31\/agbogbloshie-other-slums-to-be-upgraded-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>and other slums in the country will soon be face lifted<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Godwin Allotey Akweiteh\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An e-waste recycling plant at Agbogbloshie in Accra has been abandoned, two months after its establishment.
