South African sport has suffered another blow with the news that a female professional boxer Phindile Mwelase has died after failing to emerge from a two-week coma.<\/p>\n
Mwelase, a light-welterweight, fell into the coma after a defeat by knockout to Liz Butler in a fight on 10 October in Pretoria.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”QmGJi4WTAQTNJLgPhCnoggyEIYvuvd0a”]The country\u2019s ministry for sport announced on Tuesday that Mwelase had died at the Steve Biko academic hospital in Pretoria on Saturday and called it \u201ca very difficult week\u201d for South African sport.<\/p>\n
Boxing South Africa, the national federation, announced Mwelase\u2019s funeral would be held on Saturday in her home town of Ladysmith, in the eastern Kwazulu-Natal province, and said it \u201cgrieves at the passing of a wonderful and tremendous individual\u201d.<\/p>\n
