The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gas Company, George Sipa Yankey is calling for investment into the second phase of the Ghana Gas Infrastructure project to make Ghana the hub for gas production in the sub region.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion with potential investors at the Global African Investment Summit in London, Mr Sipa Yankey said the completion of the 1st phase of the project plant would still leave Ghana with a deficit of 200 million standard cubic feet per day (sscfpd) in its gas needs, noting that more investment is needed in key areas of gas infrastructure to make Ghana’s dream of becoming a hub for the exportation of gas a reality.

The country is inviting investors to among others, design and install a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) export facility, including a tank farm as well as terminals or jetty’s for the import of LNG and export of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG.)

[contextly_sidebar id=”e9JGV5PopTjwuSv4CVYf0AWiQOEOZUSb”]According to him, Ghana has completed the first phase of 1 billion three tier project and so far, finished a 58-km 12 inch offshore pipeline from the Jubilee oil field to Atuabo, and the construction of a new Gas processing Plant with a design flow of 150mmcsfd (million metric cubic standard feet per day).

He said “the second phase involves the second frame with a capacity of about 250 million standard cubits of gas per day and then a compressor station as well to enable as compress more gas to the other centers. We are also looking at building a dual purpose Jetty to enable us to export LGP and to import LNG to supplement our gas reserves.”

“Right now we have a deficit of about 300 to 400 million scraps per day and whatever we are going to get at Atuabo will not be able to fill this gap so because of that we are bringing in LNG. That is why are building the Jetty which will both bring in import of LNG and export LPG to Tema and other neighboring countries,” he indicated.

He said government is also building a tank farm where LPG will be stored from the Gas Western plant to the Jetty for onward shipment.

“So these are some of the immediate areas that we are looking for partners to come in to give us the infrastructure that is going to help us make Ghana the hub for the energy sector,” Dr. Sipa Yankey added.

The country intends to process gas from the jubilee oil field to produce Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), condensates, pentanes and lean gas for the production of electricity.

The government announced in September 2014, the beginning of the second phase of the project with an advert requesting for proposals for the selection of a competent and capable Joint Venture Partner to finance, build and maintain the infrastructure for the transfer, storage and export of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs).

The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) was established July 2011 to build, own and operate infrastructure required for gathering, processing, transportation and marketing of natural gas resources in the country.
