The former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has said the party will resist any attempt to postpone its upcoming congress.

Speaking to Citi News, Kwadwo Afriyie, who is also known as Sir John said “I don’t want to believe that anybody in his right senses will postpone the elections which the party is poised to have on Saturday.”

The party will hold its congress on Saturday, October 18 to select a flagbearer to lead the party in the 2016 elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”uB9XDyfyJQtso1y8sa93klWz0FSHTrEp”]The candidates expected to contest for the flagbearer slot are, Nana Akufo Addo, Alan Kyeremanten and Francis Addai Nimoh.

There are reports that the party is in a crunch meeting to decide on whether to postpone the congress or not.

But Sir John is insisting the party has no basis to postpone its elections.

He added that the party cannot hide behind excuse that it is cash strapped to postpone its elections since the National Council of Elders gave specific instructions on how the party’s funds should be managed and spent judiciously.

He recalled that in 2010 , “though the party did not inherit anything”, the funds the party raised from aspirants were the same funds used for its elections.

He therefore asked the party’s leadership to account for monies spent, saying “they should come and account for the monies they collected. What did they use it for?”
