Seven suspected “witches” have been attacked and burnt to death by a mob in Tanzania.<\/p>\n
Angry villagers rounded up the suspects in the village of Murufiti, before hacking at them with machetes and setting fire to them.<\/p>\n
Police chief Jafari Mohamed said: \u201cThey were attacked and burnt to death by a mob of villagers who accused them of engaging in witchcraft.<\/p>\n
\u201cFive of those killed were aged over 60, while the other two were aged over 40.”<\/p>\n
Cops arrested 23 people on suspicion of murder following the attacks including a traditional healer, or witchdoctor.<\/p>\n
Villager Josephat John told Tanzania\u2019s Mwananchi newspaper: \u201cWhen I returned home in the evening, I found the body of my mother lying 10 metres away from our house, while the body of my father was burnt inside the house.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will appear in court to face murder charges.\u201d<\/p>\n
Belief in black magic remains strong in parts of Tanzania, with many people blaming witchcraft for misfortunes such as infertility , poverty and failure in business.<\/p>\n
The country’s Legal and Human Rights Centre estimates as many as 500 \u201cwitches\u201d – many of them elderly women or albinos – are lynched every year.<\/p>\n
