Fisherfolk in the country are appealing to government to reconsider its decision to remove subsidies on petroleum products as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).<\/p>\n
According to them, the removal of subsidies on \u00a0pre-mix fuel will gravely affect their work.<\/p>\n
The IMF, after the first round of negotiations with government, announced that petroleum subsidies will be reviewed.<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”0tqKqi0xRIB8dUotTdQnpbaAdVHxWeQ0″]However, speaking to Citi News<\/strong>, Chief Fisherman of James Town Traditional area in Accra, Nii Kai Okaishie III cautioned government against such a move.<\/p>\n He lamented that such a move if taken will cause phenomenal increases in prices of fish products.<\/p>\n \u201cIf the prices of fish goes up, it will affect the public and the fishermen as a whole so all what we want is for the subsidy to be there,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n The IMF is not the first to appeal to government to remove petroleum subsidies.<\/p>\n
